Nantwich Bookworms - we're back!

August 29th 2012

Hello Book Lovers of Nantwich!

After an extended summer break and a reshuffle of members (due to relocation and other commitments, nothing sinister!), we are pleased to announce the return of the Nantwich Bookworms. Our book this month is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

As previously, we will continue to meet on the last Sunday of the month and will convene at the Black Lion Pub, Welsh Row, Nantwich at 8pm. Our next meeting will be on Sunday September 30th as this gives us all time to get a copy of the book and to get reading.

Look out for Nantwich Bookworms coming soon on Facebook and Twitter too.

Please feel free to get in touch at nantwichbookworms@gmail.com with any questions.

See you soon!

Hello!

Shadow of the Wind was greatly enjoyed by those who turned up to our last meeting. We loved the twists and turns, the larger than life characters and the anguish of unrequited love, a theme which played out for many of the characters in the book. For me personally, I'd definitely put it up there with my all time great reads. For those who weren't there, you are very welcome to pop a little review of your own as a comment below :))

I hope everyone's enjoying The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and looking forward to the next meeting of the Bookworms on Sunday 29th April.

Update at last!

Hi, I had a blip in the log-on for the blog but I think it's ok now! It was a fairly low turn out at the last meeting, mainly due to a bit of a turn around for members at present! However everyone present all enjoyed Hunger and thought it a good read and quite a timeless read.  Although it was quite difficult to tell at times what was real and what was imagined and they found it quite different as there was so little dialogue.

The next book is Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and after that we will be reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.  The next meet will be Sunday 1 April as many are away on the 25th March. Katharine can't make the next meeting on 1st April but I think I can - so hopefully see you then! (I'm completely immersed in Shadow of the Wind and finding it a gripping read)

Although I will struggle to make future meetings, I don't mind continuing with the blog until we move but am quite happy if someone else wants to take it over. Let me know on 1st!

Hunger was rather hard to swallow

I'm afraid I can't be at the next book meeting on Sunday (26th) but I'm sure there will be an animated discussion in store on the subject of Hunger. I've popped a little review of my own below. Hopefully see you all again before setting off to Devon!

First of all must say how much I enjoyed the copy of Hunger which I requested through the library. It's a wonderfully old copy and was first lent out of Picow Farm lending library on 4th June 1974!

I have to admit that while an interesting study into how the human mind works when pushed to the limit when its owner is starving, I also found it quite exasperating and felt he brought some of his predicament on himself by his holier than thou point of view. For instance the jail scene – when he was so close to a good meal - if he'd only told the truth. There are many cases of such needless stupidity.

But then there was also lots of detail in the lighter, more humorous scenes which I found thoroughly enjoyable, such as his relationship with the woman in black right up until the end and his sheer joy at the idea of the poor boy on finding his cake in the morning.

I'm so glad it had a potentially happy ending. I think I would have descended into a mini depression if it had ended how I felt it would end all the way through – bleakly.

Glad I read it. I think.

Did we decide on Devil in the White City by Erik Larson as our next read? I think American Psycho was another potential...

Happy New Year!!

Big apologies, the library hasn't come through with any of the copies of The Great Gatsby I ordered in early December - I have no idea why and the staff don't seem to know any more than me. I guess you have all sorted out copies by now as we launch into January. I'm ordering mine tonight - I can make the next meeting as Graham is home - yippee - see you then! x
