I'm afraid I can't be at the next book meeting on Sunday (26th) but I'm sure there will be an animated discussion in store on the subject of Hunger. I've popped a little review of my own below. Hopefully see you all again before setting off to Devon!
First of all must say how much I enjoyed the copy of Hunger which I requested through the library. It's a wonderfully old copy and was first lent out of Picow Farm lending library on 4th June 1974!
I have to admit that while an interesting study into how the human mind works when pushed to the limit when its owner is starving, I also found it quite exasperating and felt he brought some of his predicament on himself by his holier than thou point of view. For instance the jail scene – when he was so close to a good meal - if he'd only told the truth. There are many cases of such needless stupidity.
But then there was also lots of detail in the lighter, more humorous scenes which I found thoroughly enjoyable, such as his relationship with the woman in black right up until the end and his sheer joy at the idea of the poor boy on finding his cake in the morning.
I'm so glad it had a potentially happy ending. I think I would have descended into a mini depression if it had ended how I felt it would end all the way through – bleakly.
Glad I read it. I think.
Did we decide on Devil in the White City by Erik Larson as our next read? I think American Psycho was another potential...
